How To Incorporate Shiplap Walls Into Your Coastal Design

Shiplap walls are one of those cool and unique design features that has really been all over the place lately! I’m always seeing shiplap being installed on my favorite HGTV home renovation shows and all over on Pinterest. I think that using shiplap walls or accents in your coastal home design is a great way to make a unique statement.

First off, what is shiplap?

In short, shiplap is a specific type of wooden plank that is installed on interior or exterior walls. Shiplap originated by using it on the outside of structures like barns. Today, we see shiplap walls in all kinds of new design style – farmhouse, coastal, and even modern.

Shiplap is pretty versatile and can come in a variety of sizes! I’ve seen it painted or stained a white wash color but can be done in any color you’d like with a little imagination and style.

Here are a few of my favorite beachy shiplap wall inspirations and a few different ways to use shiplap in your home design. Enjoy!

White Shiplap Accent Wall

One of the classic ways to use shiplap is for an accent wall. In this sitting area nook, the shiplap accent wall brings the whole space together. The color scheme is timeless with rattan sitting chairs, a wicker rug, and beachy blue accents. I love the pictures that are hung on the shiplap wall!

Most of the time, shiplap is a white-ish wash color. If you’re going for a specific vibe, like COASTAL, using a different color can definitely help achieve that look. The master bedroom here used a seafoam green color to paint the shiplap before installing it on the wall.

They also laid it out in a herringbone pattern which gives it another unique element… instead of horizonal boards!

Shiplap Bathroom Wall

Shiplap works in every room. I love the way this tiny house in Florida incorporated shiplap into their bathroom. It can be used on one wall in the bathroom or all of them.

When your bathroom is all white, use a shiplap accent wall to offset all of the white. A light wood tone is perfect for something like this.

Shiplap Wallpaper Ideas

Shiplap wood can definitely get pretty pricey. If you are on a limited budget, there are lots of option for peel and stick wallpaper that looks like shiplap! (GET SOME HERE)

You can use the peel and stick wallpaper for a fun accent wall. It’s so easy to cut to size too. Fit it between window frames and around doors.

Or it doesn’t even have to cover the whole wall! This white bookshelf with a peel and stick wallpaper shiplap is so adorable!

Bold Colored Shiplap Wall

Just like the peel and stick wallpaper idea, you can use wood planks to mimic the look of shiplap. This could save you some $$$ and still get a bold and unique look.

Try a DIY plank wall like this one from Lovely ETC. She puts together an easy to follow tutorial and the result is MAGIC!!

Instagram is one of the best places to find design inspiration… I found The Coastal Soul (go follow her!) and love following her fun coastal makeovers. This mudroom is one of my faves! They used a white shiplap wall and installed built in shelving for a casual chic beachy vibe.

  1. My daughter-in-law and I bought a beach bungalow to Airbnb, 15 months ago, in North Carolina. We need all the help we can get. I had an Airbnb in Sedona, AZ for 2 1/2 years. Now I am in business with my daughter-in-law, and we have different tastes. She had an Airbnb in Michigan on a lake for 2 years. Having a beach rental is different than what we know.
