DIY Carpet Powder To Remove Nasty Smells From Your Home

Using baking soda to clean and freshen your carpets or area rugs is a game changer! I used to buy that carpet powder in the shaker from the store until I realized I could make my own DIY carpet powder at home and save money! We all have something at our homes that might create a bad smell and get into our carpets or area rugs – pets, kids, spills, whatever it may be. I used this homemade carpet powder a few months ago and I don’t think I’ll ever buy the ones in the store again!

So, let me show you how I make my DIY carpet powder!

Baking soda can be used in many cleaning products around the house and is efficient, inexpensive, and powerful.

It is used to clean and deodorize – not just for cooking!

TIP: Buying a large bag of baking soda will save you money and you’ll have it available the next time you want to make your own cleaning products with baking soda!

What Can You Clean With Baking Soda?

Pretty much everything around your house! Here are just a few…

Baking Soda Uses For Cleaning

  • Stainless Steel
  • Sinks
  • Refrigerators
  • Countertops
  • Dishes
  • Coffee Pots
  • Ovens
  • Microwaves
  • Showers
  • Bathtubs
  • Toilets
  • Tile and Grout

Baking Soda Uses To Deodorize

  • Garbage Cans
  • Carpets (recipe in this post)
  • Dishwashers
  • Garbage Disposals and Drains

How To Make This Carpet Cleaning Powder

2 Cups Baking Soda

10-15 drops of essential oils (I love using lavender and lemon)

Container with shaker top

Combine all ingredients in the container. Shake with the lid closed!

Sprinkle on carpets or area rugs before vacuuming. Leave for at least 1 hour and up to 24 hours prior to cleaning it up with the vacuum.

This carpet powder will freshen, deodorize, and get rid of that musty smell we all hate.

If your pet had an accident, use this after you remove the stain to make sure the odor is gone!

I used this recipe on my dining room rug, and I immediately noticed that it smelled so much better! I used rosemary essential oil and it smelled wonderful. It wasn't as effective on my carpets though, but maybe it's because I have old carpet and dogs. I ended up just getting a carpet cleaning service instead.

I am definitely using this one, with a cat and old carpet (and a husband;)). Thanks Melissa! ☀️ https://goodhometime.com/ ☀️

I cannot wait to try this carpet refresher! I'm going to go buy some lavender and lemon essential oils later today so I can make it. We have professional carpet cleaners give our carpets a deep clean once a year but I'm always looking for ways to refresh them in between cleanings.
